Ill-Fitting Dentures

Dentures are used as a replacement for missing teeth. The decision to use dentures is normally taken from a range of other options, and as such a patient is placing their trust in the advice of the specialist. In most situations, this means good, well-fitted dentures. However, unfortunately, for some this can mean issues with ill-fitting dentures that can be uncomfortable, cause pain, or even lead to other problems such as gum disease.

It is normal, when dentures are first fitted, to experience mild pain and discomfort, and a sense that it feels unnatural. However, within a few weeks, these initial problems should be overcome and a patient should be able to wear their dentures largely unnoticeably. Therefore if problems persist after this initial period it is possible that the dentures are ill-fitting.

Ill-fitted dentures can lead to Oral Thrush (candidiasis). Although this is a largely painless condition, it is often unpleasant for sufferers and can go on to cause problems in itself. Additionally, poorly fitting dentures can cause periodontal (gum) disease, because a loosely fitting denture may graze the soft gum tissue, or cause swelling, causing pressure on the tender gums. In severe cases this can also lead to nutritional difficulties for patients. Also, in rare cases, denture adhesives can cause neurological problems.

Whilst gums gradually change shape, a denture should remain comfortable for a long period of time. At the time of considering dentures, and at the point of fitting, you should receive expert advice and guidance on how to care for your dentures to ensure they last for the longest possible time, but additionally protect your oral health.

If you have struggled with ill-fitting dentures and are wondering if they are to blame for other oral health problems you are having, please Contact Us we’d be happy to advise on your situation.

I am writing to you personally to say thank you to Attwood's for a job well done with my recent claims. It initially started out as one claim, but eventually became a little more complicated when another was added following a review of my condition by one of your dental experts. Throughout the last couple of years as the claim has progressed I have been fully supported by your colleague Luke Taylor. I have thanked him personally for all the good work and support he gave me over the last couple of years, it was quite a journey for both of us but with the right outcome, but I just wanted to also highlight to yourself the good service and support he provided me with. It was very much needed and appreciated. He has always been very professional and the advice he has given has always been with real feeling and thought, and not the "just my job" attitude. Even when I was very wary of what to do next, he always explained it in simple terms for me understand and move forward. If I ever need similar help in the future, your company will be the first I contact. With my sincere appreciation and regards.
